First Comment on Liturgy: "Preserve Your Traditions Without Attenuating Them"
Pope Leo XIV welcomed the clergy and faithful of the Eastern Catholic rites who are in Rome for the Jubilee Year today, with their traditional Easter greeting: “Christ is risen! He is truly risen!'
During his speech, he offered his first remarks on liturgy: 'The Church needs you. We must recover the sense of mystery that remains alive in your liturgies."
Leo XIV added: "Preserve your traditions without attenuating them for the sake of practicality or convenience, lest they be corrupted by the mentality of consumerism and utilitarianism."
As many of the Catholics present are from regions affected by conflict, Leo XIV spoke about peace: "Who better than you can sing a song of hope even amid the abyss of violence?"
Leo XIV believes that 'war is never inevitable' and that 'weapons can and must be silenced', adding that the Holy See is always ready to help bring enemies together face to face so they can talk to one another.
